A quick snack without risks for the body and the environment: more and more domestic fast food restaurants are changing their concept towards healthy eating. This trend also applies to food packaging, which is to be made from environmentally friendly raw materials and be easily recyclable. Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill produces safe and high-quality material for disposable tableware. Currently this proposal is unique for Ukraine and a cost-effective alternative of import.
The pulp and paper industry is keeping pace with the times: the packaging segment is growing rapidly, and eco-friendly products such as cardboard and paper made from recycled waste paper are in high demand, emphasises Dr. Heinz Zinner, CEO and beneficiary of the Austrian Pulp Mill Holding, owner of KCPM.

The mill, with production facilities located in Obukhivskyi district, offers its customers laminate bases for the production of cups, plates, trays and fast-food boxes, coated cardboard made of primary and secondary fibres (GT4), and paper (PBR) for packaging takeaways. After use, these containers are fully recyclable and environmentally friendly.
What are the benefits of KCPM cardboard?
Firstly, it is eco-friendly. Secondly, the recyclable material undergoes a multi-stage purification process, which includes hydro-fracturing, three phases of coarse and four phases of fine filtration, bactericidal treatment and water purification, as well as ultra-high-temperature processing. As a result, the manufacturer receives a completely safe material.
To ensure that the material for tableware is moisture-resistant and does not get wet in contact with liquids, the mill’s technologists use special additives during production, which allows the final product to withstand temperature and humidity fluctuations. GT4 coated paperboard for disposable packaging has two layers: the top layer is made of pigmented waste paper fibre, and the bottom layer, which contacts with food, is made of unbleached pulp, which gives the product increased stiffness and at the same time provides elasticity at the bending angles.
In its turn, PBR paper for bags at Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill is made from 100% waste paper, also with waterproof additives.
Product safety according to international standards is the top priority at KCPM
The compliance of the food safety management systems of Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill with the standards of the FSSC 22000 Certification Scheme is confirmed by documents provided to KCPM by a relevant international organization. In particular, the cardboards that directly contacts with food or are used for external packaging have received world-class certificates. The manufacturer also passed a comprehensive inspection on its own initiative to ensure that these items meet the requirements for Halal production.
Moving forward: the mill’s owners continue to invest in modernization
According to Dr. Heinz Zinner opinion, the Austrian owner, together with the management board of PJSC Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill, decided to invest €12 million in equipment upgrades in 2024. This includes replacing the Yankee cylinder on the paper machine and other innovations.
