Modernisation in Ukrainian realities: how Kyiv CPM implements European energy management standards

During the war, Kyiv CPM faced a serious challenge to maintain the sustainable operation of the enterprise and the district while minimising energy consumption. Therefore, the implementation of resource-saving technologies and the newest European energy management standards has been identified as one of the key directions of modernisation in 2024.

Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill, a part of the Austrian Pulp Mill Holding Group, is not only a leading employer and taxpayer in Obukhivskyi district, but also one of the largest electricity consumers in the region. Back in 2017, the mill joined a new energy management project with the support of the UN and the Ministry of Economic Development, and in 2021, the management system obtained ISO 50001:2018 certification.

Kyiv CPM is confident in the potential for improving the energy efficiency of an enterprise is largely determined by the level of modernity of its equipment. That is, the newer the production line, the better it meets the valid requirements and European energy saving trends. At present, like most domestic enterprises in the industry, Kyiv CPM has equipment of the 1980s, but the company has repeatedly upgraded it to reduce costs and increase the competitiveness of its products.

“Currently, we have almost run out of the potential to increase the energy efficiency of this equipment.  The next step is to replace it with more modern equipment or to upgrade the energy-intensive parts in a multi-module modernisation. In particular, the purchase of a new high-speed dryer hood (covering the top of the Yankee cylinder – editor’s note),” the mill informed.

Kyiv CPM continues to constantly work for rationalising energy consumption.
Last October the Austrian owner of Kyiv CPM and the company’s Management Board agreed on €12 million modernisation plans for 2024 and key technical development programmes. A re-certification audit of management systems confirmed the high management standards of the mill, with workshop managers actively implementing Lean production principles and methods.

Why are Lean principles important for the efficient company operation?
It involves forecasting resource consumption based on the range of products, continuous correction of equipment operation (prompt assessment of deviations, maintaining the nominal level of machine load, eliminating no-load operation, etc.), and staff relations.

Precise daily and hourly calculation of energy consumption targets for the main production processes allows to correctly determine the ordered volumes and plan purchases of natural gas and electricity from suppliers, avoiding imbalances and, accordingly, negative financial consequences. As a result, today Kyiv CPM is a reliable economic pillar of the Obukhiv community and the entire region. According to the company’s ultimate beneficiary, Dr Heinz Zinner, the timely implementation of force majeure response measures ensured the mill to continue nonstop operation, to provide its customers and partners with products and to pay taxes while minimising electricity consumption.

Kyiv CPM’s experience proves that responsible entities in society – from large businesses to individuals – are increasingly aware of the need for more efficient management and use of natural resources.

“Everyone in their place must make a contribution to achieve energy efficiency. No one else will do it for us,” is the motto under which the mill plans development and modernisation in 2024.
