Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill: an Austrian owner invests in zero waste production

As a domestic enterprise that adheres to modern European values, Kyiv CPM is committed to zero waste production. This approach is the basis of the company`s sustainable development strategy, one of which is to transform waste from the production process into finished products as a source of additional income.

Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill, with the assistance of its Austrian owners, is investing millions of euros in the renewal and modernization of its fixed assets.

These investments allow Kyiv CPM to boost its efficiency.

According to Dr Heinz Zinner, CEO of the Austrian PMH Group (the owner of Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill), as of 2025, the mill has significantly reduced the amount of waste shipped to landfills by setting up equipment for recycling production residues. This reduces the need for resources by using materials from waste paper processing.

In particular, shredded film is used as fuel, and one of the key by-products, osprey, is in demand in the construction industry. Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill offers its customers a product called waste paper fibre osprey, which is widely used for the production of building materials and road maintenance.

Osprey from Kyiv CPM is an eco-friendly material with numerous advantages.

Not only is osprey appealing because of its relative eco-friendliness, heat and power potential, but also its kaolin content, which is a valuable natural raw material. The large volumes and low cost of osprey are a strong reason to use it as a filler or binder in cement mixtures, and in combination with Portland cement, enables to produce composite materials.

Paperboard osprey produced by Kyiv CPM is ready-made raw material for the construction industry

These features make osprey a popular material for the manufacture of blocks, wall panels and structural and thermal insulation lightweight concrete. Thus, the use of osprey in the construction industry not only reduces industrial waste but also contributes to the development of Ukraine`s economy by providing the domestic market with affordable materials for post-war reconstruction.

It is important to note that the waste paper osprey from Kyiv CPM fully complies with the current medical and environmental safety criteria in Ukraine. This is confirmed by the conclusions of the state sanitary and epidemiological examination.

Not only film and osprey: Kyiv CPM implements another innovative project on the way to zero waste production

In 2024, an important initiative of Kyiv CPM was the purchase of a modern shredder for jute processing. This equipment allows to separate waste and obtain two additional valuable secondary materials:

  • SRF fuel;
  • metal wire.

The shredder sorts scrap metal directly into a container for transportation

Kyiv CPM`s ambitious new project is already showing its first results.

The Austrian owner spent EUR 710 thousand on equipment to implement the project. As of today, the Obukhiv mill already processes more than 200 tonnes of jute per month, fully covering its own needs. In the nearest future, Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill plans to increase these volumes to 500 tonnes.

The finished products are in high demand, as waste paper osprey and SRF film are suitable for all industrial enterprises interested in reducing production costs. The availability of osprey and the use of alternative fuels to replace primary energy resources can significantly reduce the cost of finished products.

Thus, Kyiv CPM sets a new direction for the development of eco-conscious and efficient business in Ukraine. Reducing industrial waste and converting it into useful materials not only helps to protect the environment but also creates new market opportunities for both producers and corporate consumers.
