Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill: preserving cultural heritage is one of the aspects of responsible business

During the war, language and culture need protection no less than state borders. The loss of connection with the cultural heritage of ancestors threatens to destroy the national code. While the country is focused on military spending, maintaining cultural heritage becomes a matter of responsible business.

A common hobby united the employees of the Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill.

Obukhiv towel – a national amulet and an object of cultural projects of KCPM

Original ornaments and the local embroidery method formed the unique phenomenon of the Obukhiv towel. The tradition and technology of making the Obukhiv “sewn” towel is included in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine. It has become a source of pride for people of the Obukhivskyi district and a reason to study and develop their native culture. Adults learn the secrets of special embroidery, and children memorize ancient symbols by reproducing them through drawing.

“Culture is not just history, it is our present and future. It distinguishes us from others and makes us stronger. That is why it is so important to preserve our cultural heritage, revive traditions and pass them on to the next generations,” says Larysa Ilienko, Secretary of the Obukhiv Town Council.

The record of Ukraine was set by 60 children in the company`s workshop.

In October 2024, at Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill, students from lyceums in Obukhivskyi district set the Ukrainian record for painting the longest Obukhiv towel on 62-metre-long cardboard. Thanks to this event a lot of people got to know about the record-breaking towel, and the interest of young people in authentic crafts has grown significantly.

Embroidery school for the guardians of an ancient tradition

Olha Matviichuk and Olha Stakhiv, representatives of the NGO Cultural Heritage Association of Craftsmen, were supported by Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill, which provided convenient premises for the guardians of exceptional skills to hold regular classes for those who want to learn local embroidery.

“We hope that the permanent premises will help attract more people to learn the local embroidery technique and pass this knowledge on. We are happy to support the development of cultural heritage. Our plans include production projects that will popularize Obukhiv patterns in the Ukrainian information field,” says Yurii Golovchenko, Chairman of the Board of Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill.

At Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill, people now learn to embroider.

The grand opening of the Obukhiv Rushnyk Embroidery School recently brought together the holders of sacred craft experience, the employees of KCPM, activists and the administration of the Obukhiv community. It was a small but truly sincere celebration of common values and all participants fully realized that our culture needs support not only from the state and business, but also from every conscious Ukrainian.

Sustainable operation of the mill is a resource for humanitarian initiatives

Despite the challenging times, the leader of the pulp and paper industry, Kyiv Pulp and Paper Mill, owned by Austrian Pulp Mill Holding with Dr Heinz Zinner as the ultimate beneficiary, continues to build prospects and implement plans.

“People are the highest value for Kyiv CPM,” says Heinz Zinner, Director of PMH.

Therefore, in addition to cultural support projects, the mill is implementing a number of other initiatives aimed at improving the lives of the region`s population:

  • supporting medical and educational institutions;
  • holding events to improve the level of culture and environmental education of children;
  • promoting useful and interesting leisure activities for young people and families, etc.

Such programs are extremely important, as the vast majority of KCPM`s employees are locals, and the company cares about their well-being and strengthens the social protection of people out of production. Therefore, these projects always find a wide range of support from both the mill`s shareholders and management, as well as from the people of Obukhiv, as they facilitate joint development and prosperity.
