Kyiv CPM invested €19 million in reliability, environmental friendliness, and high quality

Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill keeps investing in development despite the war. Geopolitical instability, complicated logistics, and limited access to external financing did not hinder the mill’s operations, the Austrian owner set clear goals for 2025: to continue modernization, strengthen the competitive advantages of products, and implement energy-saving and environmentally friendly solutions.

Dr. Heinz Zinner, Director of Pulp Mill Holding, emphasizes: in these difficult times, Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill strives to be a reliable pillar of support for the Ukrainian economy, the paper industry, and the community.

Kyiv CPM ensures uninterrupted supply of water, work for citizens, and tax payments

According to the mill, the key driver for continued investment is the need to ensure uninterrupted operations. This is not only an economic priority but also a social one, Kyiv CPM has been the largest taxpayer in Kyivska oblast for several years, maintaining critical infrastructure in Obukhivskyi district and providing hot water, heating, and wastewater treatment for the local people.

In the annual rating of “Conscientious Taxpayers,” KCPM is always among the leaders

At the same time, the company, which will celebrate its 43rd anniversary this year, needs regular updates of equipment, production units, and machinery. Over the past three years, an Austrian investor has invested €15 million in the technical upgrading of the mill, including about €10 million last year.

2025 investment plan provides for the implementation of energy-saving and eco-initiatives at KСPM

In particular, with the support of the owner, Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill plans to install the following at its production facilities:

  • a modern Yankee cylinder for a papermaker machine with 10% higher energy efficiency than previous models;
  • new pump motors with significantly lower energy consumption for the same production capacity.

Another important vector is the creation of waste-free production. In 2024, €710,000 were allocated for the purchase of a shredder for jutes shredding and separating metal. This will allow the mill to minimize waste disposal at landfills and obtain two by-products: SRF fuel and metal wire, which are sold as valuable raw materials and energy resources.

Kyiv CPM also focuses its investments on the quality and competitiveness of its products.

In cardboard and corrugated board production, KCPM plans to introduce innovative technologies for leveling and drying paper layers. In the sanitary and hygiene segment, a step ahead was the purchase of a new embossing roller with Saver engraving from Engraving Solutions (Italy), which not only allows creating sophisticated ornaments on paper products, but also minimizes the use of glue by 80%.

KCPM overcomes logistical challenges in implementing projects

The delivery of large-sized units is challenging, as traditional routes for transporting equipment by water along the Dnipro River have become inaccessible due to the war. Kyiv CPM is currently considering alternative routes and has the support of the Ukrainian authorities, relevant state institutions, the Kyiv and Odesa regional state administrations, etc.

Logistics is complicated by the inability to transport large-sized cargo by water.

The state`s trust is justified: thanks to the stable operation of Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill (over 320,000 tons of commercial products per year), the domestic market does not experience a shortage of sanitary products and packaging solutions, even during the difficult war period.

Next steps? Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill is approaching the future with cautious optimism

“Unfortunately, current forecasts for capacity expansion require caution. The mill is trying to meet domestic demand as much as possible for each product line. We are very flexible and, if consumers need certain changes or diversification of the product portfolio, we adapt our products to customer requests. Possible prospects for the resumption depend primarily on the stabilization of the overall political situation,” said Iurii Golovchenko, Chairman of the Board of PJSC Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill.

Consulting and assistance in modernizing the enterprise are provided by the best Italian companies in the paper industry

In April, representatives of KCPM made a business trip to Italy, where they visited the equipment manufacturer Toscotec and two contracting organizations. During the visit, they discussed with partners the key areas for further cooperation, the adaptation of delivery schedules to the challenges of wartime, and other issues.

“Investments must work for Ukraine even in the most difficult times. We prove this every day,” emphasize the representatives of mill.
