Kyiv CPM protects the environment: the manufacturer turns waste paper into environmentally friendly cardboard

High-quality product without harm to the environment: recycling has long been the No. 1 eco-trend in the world, but is only gaining popularity in Ukraine. As a socially responsible company with European investments (owned by Pulp Mill Holding, Austria), Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill was the first in Ukraine to implement a full production cycle that starts with waste paper collection and ends with the production of environmentally friendly cardboard and paper products.

Taking care of the environment is one of the core values of Kyiv CPM. PMH Director Dr . Heinz Zinner emphasizes that the global paper industry is now focused on recycled products, and the mill is a trendsetter of this approach in Ukraine,.

New life for waste paper: Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill implements leading environmental practices

The company has implemented a full cycle of recycling – from waste sorting and waste paper collection, which involves the community and schoolchildren of Obukhiv, to the sale of high-quality certified products. The company has its own raw material collection points, which is a significant advantage. After all, imported waste paper contains more additional waste elements, while Ukrainian waste paper is of higher quality and cheaper, the representatives of mill emphasize.

Iurii Golovchenko, Chairman of the Board of Kyiv CPM, says the company processes about 1,000 tons of waste paper per day, turning former paper waste into coated and uncoated packaging cardboard, containerboard, the basis for making disposable tableware, linerboard and other popular formats.

At the same time, all finished cardboard and paper products from Kyiv CPM are fully recyclable. Both ordinary citizens and large industrial enterprises and retail chains can hand in their containers for recycling. Thus, consumers not only help clean up the environment, but also get a kind of cashback from using the mill’s products. Everyone benefits: the producer, customers, the community, and the state.

Without risks to consumers and the environment: Kyiv CPM destroys stereotypes about waste cardboard as “dirty”

In the recycling process, waste paper undergoes three phases of coarse and four phases of fine cleaning, is subjected to bactericidal treatment, and water is filtered using special equipment. Dr. Zinner emphasizes that such a conscientious approach makes the final products manufactured by Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill 100% safe and environmentally friendly.

This is confirmed by the fact that Kyiv CPM has certificates of compliance with national and international standards. In addition, the mill has undergone voluntary certification of its supply chain according to the Forest Stewardship Council`s FSC-STD-40-004, and on its own initiative received the Halal certificate, which confirms the high level of food safety of its cardboard products.

To meet the highest-level standards, the mill, with the support of the owner, is constantly modernizing its production processes

For example, at the beginning of last year, under the leadership of Dr. Zinner, the top management of PJSC Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill developed an eco-strategy aimed at complete recycling of additional waste elements of production.

At the same time, the company began purchasing equipment from the German manufacturer Weima for shredding jute and metal separation. Since September this year, the new unit has been in operation, reducing the hazardous impact on the environment. The Austrian owner of Kyiv CPM invested EUR 860 000 in the implementation of this important project, which brings Ukraine closer to the European level of environmental awareness not in word but in deed.
