Paper trends: how innovative packaging is driving the development of the printing and cardboard industry

Packaging solutions are coming to the fore

Last weekend of May, Ukraine celebrated the Day of Publishers, Printing and Book Distribution – the importance of this sector can hardly be overestimated in the context of a revival of interest to the Ukrainian printed word. However, total digitalization and new consumer demands have significantly changed the current vectors of development of the printing and paper industry, shifting the focus to the packaging and branding segment. Thus, packaging innovations from Kyiv CPM are the driver of the domestic market.

The ultimate beneficial owner and CEO of Austrian Pulp Mill Holding (a shareholder of Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill and Pulp Mill Print), Dr Heinz Zinner emphasizes that the product direction of the market has undergone dramatic changes in recent years. According to the opinion of the CEO with more than 60 years of experience in the industry, in the context of digitalization, art and newspaper printing is losing its relevance, and packaging solutions are coming to the fore.

Global statistics confirm this thesis

According to a recent Smithers study, demand for paper products is steady: it is expected that the global printing industry will grow by an average of 2.1% annually over the next five years. Analysts believe that this development will be driven primarily by the labels and packaging sector, which currently accounts for approximately 60% of the global printing market.

What about Ukraine?

According to Ukrpapir Association, as of the end of April 2024, the total production of paper and cardboard increased by 24.5% compared to the same period last year. At the same time, the issue of printed products decreased by more than 40%, and the key growth drivers in the industry were containerboard (+37.8%) and corrugated boxes (+32.8%).

The absolute leader and market maker in this segment is Kyiv CPM.

Despite the challenges caused by the war and the complication of supply chains, since October 2022, the company has not only stabilized but also improved its production and sales, increasing its output by 1.8% last year. The catalyst for this growth was investment in the modernization and development of promisimg packaging areas – SRP packaging, as well as E-commerce and postal boxes.

What type of products is this?

Currently, the mill offers its customers specially designed corrugated cardboard packaging customized to the size of the shelves, with advertising information on the product, which ensures reliable transportation of FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) from the manufacturer to the retailer and minimizes the retailers’ merchandising costs.

And for the e-commerce and postal market, KCPM`s technology engineers have developed a special Easy box configuration – packaging that can be assembled and disassembled with one click and eliminates the use of non-ecological tape and packaging film by applying permanent adhesive. Sub-types of such packaging solutions include the Wine box for transporting glass bottles of alcohol and the Book-mailer box aimed at the online book trade segment.

Being trendy is not only about your own development, but also about a positive impact on allied industries

Compact and multipurpose book boxes made from recycled materials, with a design, that protects the contents from possible damage during transportation, enable publishers and marketplaces to speed up the order process and increase sales.

Thus, innovative packaging solutions from Kyiv CPM both directly and indirectly boost the development of the domestic paper and printing industry and the country’s economic recovery during the war.
