Increasing number of wounded people, destruction and damage of medical facilities as a result of enemy shelling, lack of qualified personnel due to migration and mobilization to the front are the problems of domestic medicine in wartime. This complicates the access of Ukrainians to timely medical care or leads to a decrease in the quality of services. However, big business is now able to reduce the burden on the public healthcare system by launching its own services in this segment. Today, Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill of the Austrian Pulp Mill Holding has proven experience of such activities.
Satisfying basic medical needs
Kyiv CPM has its own outpatient clinic. A therapist conducts daily appointments. The gynecological and physiotherapy rooms are equipped to the highest standards. If necessary, you can undergo manipulation procedures. Qualified medical staff performs intramuscular and intravenous injections, IV drips, electrocardiography, wound care, and blood pressure measurements. A laboratory technician collects and processes basic clinical tests upon a doctor’s referral.
Thanks to these facilities the mill’s medical unit is able to take over some of the patients in Obukhivskyi district and reduce the load on local clinics.

Oleksandr Remeniuk, the head of the outpatient clinic at KCPM:
– In addition to the main work, our facility carries out pre- and post-trip medical examinations of the mill’s drivers on a daily basis. More than 28 thousand of them were conducted within the last year. In particular, our outpatient clinic has the facilities and official permit to conduct an examination to determine intoxication.
In Obukhivskyi district, Kyiv CPM is the only enterprise that systematically conducts mass blood donations, as our employees are highly conscious, and the outpatient clinic has all the necessary conditions for the simultaneous work of several teams of the blood transfusion station.
Health improvement procedures
Employees of the mill can take advantage of the physiotherapy room: manual and apparatus massage, magnetic and laser therapy, UV irradiation, etc. This is convenient for patients, as the outpatient clinic is located on the territory of the enterprise, so employees can undergo necessary procedures on-the-job, saving time, and free of charge.
Emergency care
An emergency medical team is on duty at KCPM around the clock. In case of an emergency, an ambulance equipped with all the necessary equipment promptly delivers the patient to a level II medical facility. Recently, the company purchased a defibrillator to effectively respond to emergencies.
In the case of an industrial injury, employees know how to handle the emergency, as the outpatient clinic staff regularly conducts training in first aid, taking into account the particularities of the company’s structural units.

Medical insurance – guaranteed support
For many years, Kyiv CPM has been providing a system of employer-based health insurance. In 2023, the mill spent UAH 14 million 387 thousand for insurance. The company chooses only companies with best deals for its employees and pensioners. Family members of employees also have the opportunity to obtain insurance on special favorable terms.

Larysa Dushyna, retired employee of KCPM:
– I am pleased that the mill has programs to support employees who have already retired. One of them is health insurance. With a GP’s prescription, you can get a certain list of medicines at the pharmacy without charge. This allows you to save a little on treatment, because retired people get sick more often and have less financial resources than those who are working. We appreciate the opportunity to seek advice on various issues from an outpatient physician, as a specialist’s opinion on health is very important.
Therefore, socially responsible business can not only support the country’s economy but also be useful and progressive in other important areas of society, including medicine, but it requires the desire and significant human and financial resources. Nevertheless, practice proves that prioritizing employee health is a promising and winning business strategy at all times and in all situations.
