In a period of macroeconomic uncertainty, Kyiv CPM demonstrates true leadership and social responsibility.

Despite the war and external challenges, PJSC “Cardboard and Paper Mill” continues to support the social sphere of Obukhiv region, creates new jobs and implements ambitious environmental initiatives.

Kyiv CPM is critically important for the life-sustaining functions of Obukhiv and, without exaggeration, is a town-forming enterprise that provides essential services to Obukhiv residents: it recycles household waste and provides heating, effectively subsidizing these functions. It should be noted that currently, the tariffs paid by the town for these services do not fully cover the actual costs of the mill, but the management of Kyiv CPM remains firmly committed to its social mission and continues to provide comprehensive support to the community and the ecosystem of the district.

According to a decision of Pulp Mill Holding, Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill is implementing a large-scale technological upgrade program aimed, in particular, at reorienting towards zero-waste production. The total investment in 2023 amounted to approximately UAH 147.5 million, in 2024 – over UAH 348 million, and for the first five months of this year – already almost UAH 200 million.

Projects are financed from Kyiv CPM`s own funds with the support of Austrian shareholder PMH and its ultimate beneficiary Dr Heinz Zinner. All innovations are based on European principles of sustainable development.

Innovative solutions from Kyiv CPM for energy efficiency

This principle of social responsibility is the basis for further technological development. The investment strategy of Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill for 2025 includes introducing advanced energy-saving technologies, such as upgrading the paper machine, which will cost over UAH 330 million. These technological solutions allow the manufacturer not only to improve product quality, but also to significantly reduce energy consumption, which is in line with the strategy of sustainable natural resource use. Amid the challenges Ukraine faces against the circumstance of war, such energy efficiency is of particular importance not only for the enterprise, but also for the energy security of the region.

KCPM modernizes waste paper processing and waste management processes

Continuing to increase investment even amid wartime, KCPM is implementing the principles of “efficiency, closed loop cycle and minimization of environmental impact” into all production processes. Last year, the mill took an important step by investing approximately UAH 33 million in the purchase of waste separation equipment. This equipment has fundamentally changed Kyiv CPM`s approach to industrial waste management.

The purchase of a shredder made it possible to launch processes for building zero-waste production.

Thanks to new equipment of KCPM, in 2025, 100% of the jutes produced in jute manufacturing will be recycled, turning into two valuable by-products:

• SRF fuel,
• metal wire.

This approach is part of a zero-waste production strategy and allows for the almost complete elimination of waste disposal in landfills, while also creating additional sources of income from the sale of secondary raw materials. Such an initiative is particularly valuable in a situation where the company is de facto taking on functions that could be performed by state structures.

Compliance with legislation: Kyiv CPM implements domestic and European environmental standards

Despite the difficult period for running a business in Ukraine, any progress in the field of environmental protection needs to be supported by compliance with legislation. KCPM operates exclusively within the current regulatory framework of Ukraine and supports the implementation of European environmental directives.

In 2025, the company completed an environmental impact assessment and received a positive environmental impact assessment conclusion. Also, in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Waste Management”, Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill received a permit to carry out waste treatment operations. These achievements are particularly valuable, as they were obtained during a period when administrative processes are complicated by the state of war.

Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill expands markets for valuable waste

Despite the challenges of the present, the zero-waste production strategy has opened up new market opportunities for KCPM. The mill sells fiber waste paper to construction companies, which use it to manufacture bricks, wall panels and other building materials particularly necessary for post-war reconstruction needs.

It is important to mention that the fiber waste from Kyiv CPM fully complies with current medical and environmental safety standards, as confirmed by a state sanitary and epidemiological examination.

In turn, SRF fuel obtained from recycled film has become an important product for industrial consumers. This solid fuel has high calorific value and can replace traditional energy sources such as coal and gas in accordance with European standards. In the context of the energy crisis, such alternative energy sources are of strategic importance for the country`s economy.

Focus on eco-awareness: Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill actively develops community environmental education programs

In May, Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill joined the First Austrian-Ukrainian ESG Forum under the guidance of the Embassy of the Republic of Austria, where the opportunities of introducing advanced technologies in the field of renewable energy and waste management for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine were discussed. Representatives of KCPM shared the mill`s experience in the rational management of industrial waste and exchanged experiences with colleagues on the implementation of European ESG principles and the environmental transformation of domestic industry.

Even in the difficult conditions of wartime, the company does not forget about another extremely important mission – the education and mentorship of the younger generation. On 7 June, with the support of the mill, the traditional eco-quest for schoolchildren in Obukhiv was held. Through interactive games children and teenagers learned about sustainability, waste sorting rules and resource conservation.

KCPM also encourages graduates to enroll in relevant higher education institutions, creating opportunities for practical training for future industry specialists. After all, investment in human capital is crucial for the future reconstruction of the country.

This is an investment in the future – both for the enterprise and for the country as a whole,” emphasized Iurii Golovchenko, Chairman of the Board of PJSC “Kyiv Cardboard and Paper Mill”.

Although the company needs mutual support from the state, especially given the contribution that KCPM makes to the development of the local community and environmental safety in the region, the mill`s management relies primarily on its own resources.

This comprehensive approach demonstrates that Kyiv CPM considers environmental responsibility not only as a production necessity, but also as its contribution to the sustainable development of society and the development of a new generation of eco-conscious businesses capable of supporting the country even in the most difficult times.
